Ancient Slavic supreme deities
All Slavic gods were part of the ancient pagan pantheon. The gods were divided into two groups the functional gods and solar gods. The supreme god of the Slavs was Svarog (aka Rod). The Solar gods: Horse, Jari, Dazhdbog and Svarog. Functional gods of the Slavs: Perun - the patron of lightning and soldiers, Simargl - the deity of death, the sacred image of the heavenly fire, Velez - black god, the lord of the dead, the patron of trade, books, wisdom and magic, Stribog - the god of wind.
Slavs, since ancient times, have marked the changing seasons and changing phases of the sun. So, for every time of the year (spring, summer, autumn and winter) was responsible his god (Horse, Jari, Dazhdbog and Svarog), especially revered throughout the season. So Horse was worshiped between the winter solstice and the spring (from December 22 to March 21). God Yarylo venerated between the spring and the summer solstice (from 21 March to 22 June). Dazhdbog was worshiped in the period between the summer solstice and autumn (from 22 June to 23 September). God Svarog was venerated between the autumn solstice and the winter (from September 23 to December 22).
The traditions of honoring the Slavic gods in Russia have deep roots and still are very tenacious. Even after the adoption of Christianity and the Baptism of Russia, people had continued to be worshiped on the most powerful Slavic deities in the guise of Orthodox saints.
Svarog – Slavic supreme god
Svarog – is god of fire. He is one of the most important gods in the Slavic pantheon. “Svarga” in Sanskrit - is the sky, the firmament, “Var” - is fire or heat. Svarog was considered the deity of Heaven, the Mother of Life (“Swa” on the Indo-European means the mother-ancestor). Svarog - is the deity of an old sun, riding in a chariot, cold and dark. Nature's silent old man, dressed in the white as snow clothing.
The Slavs almost believed the heavenly gods are based on fire. Thanks to the work of Svarog the people had learned how to wield fire, how to do metal processing, created by the "image and likeness" of heaven - the plow. People also believed that Svarog gave to them laws and knowledge. Then the supreme deity retired and handed over the reins to his sons: Horse, Dazhdbog and Jari.
Horse - is the deity of the sun. Horse, firewood, Christ, cross, flints, spark, dance, horo, Kolo, wheel brace, count, carols, circle, blood red - all these words are related to each other and represent the concepts associated with fire and circle and red color. If you merge them into one, we have the image of the sun, which will be described metaphorically.
Start the New Year Slavs celebrated on December 22 - on the day of the winter solstice. It was believed that on this day is born an awesome little sun in the form of a boy - Horsa. The new sun has completed the course of the old sun (the old year), and opened the course of the next year. While the sun is still weak on the ground and the cold night dominates, every day the Horse god (as mentioned in the 'Lay') is growing, and the sun is getting stronger.
Jari - is the God of conception, the God of the ardent awakening of nature and the vernal light. Yarylo has marked the triumph of love. Scientists have come to a decision that this god refers to the descendants of Svarog and to the Velez descendants. It is likely that there are no discrepancies. If we consider that once Svarog was a goddess (Velez's sex did not change), the Yarylo - is a child of both parents. In the minds of the people who still are worshiping the old Slavic deities, Yarylo is a deity that represents a young beautiful bride, who had taken part in a various festivals of the spring. Yarylo gives a good harvest, healthy offspring, he casts out and the winter cold. The name comes from the word Yarylo "an outspoken" - strong, powerful. Not without reason in the western lands, he had a different name - spring.
By the time when the summer solstice is coming Yarylo is gaining his full force. He lives in the truth and love to the earth, giving rise to new life in the summer. By June 22, Yarylo turns into “belbogs”, the longest day; nature caresses him and loves him. Yarylo condition - is the condition of all the young guys.
Dazhdbog - is the god of fertility, symbolized the power and brightness of the light, its thermal characteristics, life-giving warmth and even the rules of the universe. From Dazhdbog (giving God) expected the fulfillment of wishes, health and other benefits. The Symbols of this deity was silver and gold - the bright and glowing metals.
Dazhdbog, gives rain – has the same root word with the value of «to divide, distribute". Dazhdbog sent to people not only rain, but also the sun that imbues the earth with light and heat. Dazhdbog - this autumn sky with clouds, rain and sometimes hail. September 22 - Fall Equinox, holiday Roda, the day of Dazhdbog and Mokos.
All crops have been harvested and collected, were held last work in the garden and in the gardens. People celebrate the arrival of autumn, lit the fires and the burning circle that should roll down from the hill. Often in the old days, people had arranged a feast in honor of Dazhdbog exposing all the most delicious on the table, and inviting people to visit as relatives and friends as well as strangers. In this way, people praised the ancient gods, and in this case, the ancient Slavic deity - Dazhdbog.
